MORTAR 2019-present

MORTAR aims to create diverse communities by training historically marginalized entrepreneurs to access the resources needed to start and operate successful small businesses. Its goal is to change lives, build wealth and transform cities by focusing on people who are often ignored in neighborhoods that are underserved. Since its founding in 2014 in Over-the-Rhine by three young Black men, MORTAR has helped more than 300 businesses, 87% of which are owned by Black people or other people of color and 67% by women. MORTAR now operates in multiple neighborhoods as well as six other cities. SVP has worked with MORTAR to create plans and processes for expansion to new cities. It has also worked to build planning tools and infrastructure operations for human resources, communications, finance and budgeting, fundraising and revenue generation, technology, evaluation and board governance and management.
